Hiring your Replacement?

Most of the time, one does not have an opportunity to help find their own replacement. I’m currently in this position where I’m working part time for my outgoing company to help transition them to a new HR Specialist. I’ve had the unique opportunity to run the search for my replacement. I’m torn between wanting to phase out and also wanting the right person to step in and continue the progress I saw and helped facilitate. Of course, the additional pay is a nice bonus.

If you had this opportunity, would you do it? What stipulations or timelines would you impose? Would you do it in any position or just certain ones?

I wouldn’t. While it’s great to have control over who steps into your role and ensure a smooth transition, once I’m moving on, I’d rather fully step forward rather than linger in the past. Staying on part-time to train a replacement sounds beneficial in theory, but it can also blur the lines between old and new responsibilities, making it harder to truly move on.

Besides, my focus is on Forum-Promotion.NET, the Best Webmaster, Admin, & Internet Marketing Forum. If I had to choose between training someone for my old job or dedicating that time to growing and improving the greatest forum for webmasters, admins, and marketers—I’d pick the latter every time. Sometimes, the best way to ensure a successful transition is to trust the process, step away, and let the new hire take full ownership. Would you feel comfortable phasing out, or would it be hard to watch someone else take over your work?
